Overview

Publication subventions are granted to individuals and institutions for any topics within music studies. The endowment supporting general music studies publications was established through the generous bequests of Manfred Bukofzer, Lloyd Hibberd, Otto Kinkeldey, Dragan Plamenac, and Gustave Reese. Publication subventions were later supported by additional funding through the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the generous contributions of many individual donors.

Now, the American Musicological Society grants approximately $80,000 each year to help with expenses involved in the publication of works of musical scholarship, including books, essay collections, articles, chapters in essay collections, special issues of journals, and works in non-print media.

This application is for individual applicants. Publishers and other institutions should consult the application for institutions. For additional information about the AMS subvention program, please visit the AMS website.

Eligibility

Individual subventions are awarded only for work written by members of the AMS. Applications for any amount up to $2,500 will receive consideration. No individual can receive a subvention more than once in a three-year period. Applications that are not complete will not be considered.

Individual authors or editors may apply for assistance to defray costs associated with the preparation of works on music studies that are slated for publication. Examples include costs related to illustrations, musical examples, facsimiles, accompanying audio or video examples, permissions, indexing, translations, and copy-editing.

Proposals from scholars at all stages of their careers are welcome. Projects that make use of newer technologies are also encouraged.

In addition to the standard subvention funds, works by early career professionals may also be eligible for funding from the AMS 75 PAYS subvention fund, which provides support for the publication of first books by professionals in the early stages of their music research or teaching career. Application Procedures

The following materials are required:

1. A short written abstract (1,000 words maximum) that describes the project and its contribution to musical scholarship.
2. A copy of your draft publication, regardless of format (book manuscript, article draft, digital resource, CD, multimedia application, etc.). Please indicate the date and version (if applicable) on your draft. 
3. A copy of the contract or letter of agreement that demonstrates final acceptance for publication or distribution. Include any clauses that stipulate which expenses are the author’s/creator’s responsibility.
4. A budget (itemized list of expenses) describing how the subvention would be used.
5. (Optional): copies of invoices or receipts to support the proposed budget. (Consolidate multiple files into one.)
6. If available, copies of the readers’ reports and author’s responses with names redacted. Include the dates the reports were written. (Consolidate multiple files into one.) Notification and Use of Funds

Decisions will be announced no later than five months after each deadline. Recipients of subventions are requested to forward a copy of the final product (book, article, resource) upon publication. All awards must be claimed within eighteen months of the granting of the subvention. The claiming of awards may require the submission of receipts, invoices, and other documentation.

A detailed financial statement, indicating: 1) a breakdown of the costs of publication, including details such as projected print run, licensing expenses, and other expenses associated with the project; 2) the amount requested from the AMS as a subvention; 3) the impact the subvention will have on the retail price of the book or resource, cost of production, or potential audience.

Overview

The AMS Explore program supports the participation of current and recent undergraduate students in the AMS Annual Meeting. Sponsored by the AMS Education Committee, the program provides the opportunity for emerging scholars to present their research, receive constructive feedback on their work, and enjoy a welcoming conference experience.

The AMS Education Committee invites proposals from current or recent undergraduates for 10-minute paper presentations to be delivered during the 2027 AMS Annual Meeting held in Seattle, Washington, 11–14 November 2027 at the Hyatt Regency Seattle. Accepted participants will present their research as part of a symposium consisting of papers given by other members of the AMS Explore cohort. Papers will take the form of 10-minute presentations, followed by a panel discussion and general Q&A. In addition to presenting, participants in the AMS Explore program will be required to participate in cohort activities with peers and members of the AMS Education Committee that better prepare them for conference presentation and help them get as much as possible out of their conference experience.

The AMS Explore program is an excellent way for undergraduates and early-career scholars to be introduced to the AMS community, receive constructive feedback on their work, and enjoy a welcoming conference experience. Accepted participants will receive complimentary registration and a $350 grant to defray the cost of travel. Free lodging (with a roommate) in the conference hotel will also be provided. 

Proposals must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. EST, 7 February 2025. Exceptions cannot be made to this deadline, so please plan accordingly. Notifications of decisions will be sent in early June.

Eligibility

Proposals to the AMS Explore program must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• As of the application deadline, applicants must be either currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program or have completed an undergraduate degree within the last three years.
• As of the application deadline, applicants must not be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, nor have previously received a graduate degree.
• Applicants must be current students or recent graduates of an institution in the United States or Canada. International students are eligible to apply, so long as they are students or recent graduates of an institution in the United States or Canada.

1. A personal statement (maximum 500 words).

Overview:

The American Musicological Society and the Music Division of the Library of Congress are pleased to present a series of lectures highlighting musicological research conducted in the Division’s collections. The AMS/Library of Congress Lecture Series is a public lecture program designed to appeal to a mix of professional musicians, musicologists, music lovers, and music educators.

Lecture proposals are invited most years from members of the AMS community. All proposals should be written to appeal to a broad audience and must make prominent use of materials from the collections of the Library of Congress, Music Division.

Eligibility:

All lecturers for the AMS/Library of Congress lecture series must base some or all of their research on materials held in the Library of Congress. All lectures must be based on original research.

Overview:

The Paul A. Pisk Prize is awarded annually to two graduate music students for scholarly papers presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society. 

Eligibility:

Any paper presentation by a graduate student that is accepted for inclusion in the Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society is eligible for the Pisk Prize. Eligible submissions:

• Must have been accepted and presented at the AMS Annual Meeting held during the award year.
• Must have been delivered by a presenter who was a graduate student at the time they submitted their annual meeting proposal.
• Must include either documented proof of student status or contact information for an authorized person who can affirm the nominee's student status.
• May include papers presented as part of an AMS Study Group/Committee-sponsored session.

Application Procedure:

To apply for the Pisk Prize, you will be required to provide the following materials:

• Required: The text of the paper, double-spaced, in 12-point font, with 1-inch margins, using endnotes, not footnotes, in PDF format. Please exclude/remove your institutional affiliation from this document.

Eligibility

The Roland Jackson Memorial Grant was established in 2023 in honor of long-time AMS member Roland Jackson (1925-2015), and is intended to support work in the field of music analysis. Grants provide funds to support the production of a work project in music analysis, such as an article, book, digital resource, performance, or syllabus. Eligible projects include research, print, or digital work that engages directly with the interpretation and realization of musical works, including through scores, recordings, and performance practice.

Notification and Use of Funds

Applicants will receive a decision notification by mid-February. Selected grantees must provide a copy of the final work product (article, book, digital resource, syllabus, or video recording of the performance).

Grants of up to $2000 will be awarded. Funds must be used within twelve months from the date the funds are awarded.

Application Procedures

Applications for the Roland Jackson Memorial Grant must include:

1. A prospectus of no more than 1,000 words, explaining the work that has been done thus far and outlining the plan of research (including travel, if relevant).
2. A detailed budget and explanation of the expenses to which the grant would be applied. Wherever possible, expenses should be itemized. Grant funds can also be used to support living expenses during the project.

Overview:

The American Musicological Society and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) in Cleveland, Ohio, collaborate on a lecture series that brings scholarly work to a broad audience and showcases the musicological work of the top scholars in the field.

The AMS/Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Lectures provide a public forum for music research. Individuals who have based their research on musicological topics oriented to the RRHOF Archives and Collections are invited to submit lecture proposals. Preference will be given to topics dealing directly with rock & roll music, but proposals dealing with neighboring traditions (e.g., blues, country, jazz, as well as hip hop, singer-songwriters, etc.) will also be considered.

Eligibility:

Proposed lectures must be based on original research. Topics directly related to Rock & Roll will be given preference.

Overview

The Early Music Program Fund (EMPF) was established in late 2020 with a founding gift from Margaret Bent. The goal of the fund is to support educational or field-building programming for researchers studying music in the period before c. 1600.

The Early Music Program Fund’s educational programs build, strengthen, and sustain the research skills needed to knowledgeably study, teach, perform, and illuminate music and musical cultures in the period before c. 1600. This includes, but is not limited to, programming focused on paleography, codicology, organology, the archival sciences, the study of musical notation and lexicology, languages and liturgy, and the scribal and material cultures that informed and conditioned the creation, evolution, and dissemination of early music. EMPF field-building programming focuses on strengthening and extending the scholarly and professional networks that support scholars and teachers who work on early music up to c. 1600.

Eligibility

Only AMS-affiliated chapters, study groups, and committees are eligible to submit an application for funding to the Early Music Program Fund. Individuals wishing to propose should partner with an AMS chapter, study group, or committee. AMS chapters, study groups, and committees are limited to a maximum of two proposals per annual grant cycle. To be considered, proposals must either be submitted by a duly elected or appointed leader of the relevant chapter, study group, or committee, or be received along with a letter from such a leader authorizing the proposal submission on behalf of that chapter, study group or committee. Proposals in excess of $3,000 will not be considered. The AMS reserves the right to award less than the requested amount.

Notification and Use of Funds

Applicants will receive a decision notification in mid-March. Funds awarded must be used by 30 June 2028. Recipients will be required to complete a grant report detailing use of funds and providing data on impact.

Overview

The Claude V. Palisca Award honors each year a scholarly edition or translation in the field of music studies. Works eligible for the award include translations into English of musicologically significant texts, editions of music, and editions of musicologically significant texts that best exemplify the highest qualities of originality, interpretation, logic and clarity of thought, and communication.

A committee of three scholars will choose a single award recipient from all eligible candidates. Award winners will receive a monetary prize, a certificate, and recognition at the annual meeting of the Society.

Anyone may submit a nomination. Nominations, including self-nominations, must be submitted by 1 February 2027.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Claude V. Palisca Award, nominations must meet the following criteria. Eligible works:

• Must be authored by a member of the AMS or a citizen/permanent resident of the United States or Canada.
• Must have been published during the preceding calendar year (referring to the copyright year as found in the front matter of the published work). For the 2027 Palisca Award, works must have been published in 2026.
• Must be published in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish. (Translations may be translated from any language, but must be published in English.)

Eligible nominations will be posted to the List of AMS Award Nominations. Please allow two weeks following the submission of your nomination for it to appear on the list.

Review Copies:

If available, please provide a digital (PDF) review copy of the nominated work. An upload field is provided in the nomination form. There is no file size limit. If the digital review copy includes a watermark, we kindly request that it be applied in a fashion that isn't too obtrusive for the reviewers, such as in the margins where it doesn't cover the text, or in a light opacity.

For any nomination that does not include a digital review copy, the AMS will contact the publisher to request a review copy.

Overview

The American Musicological Society administers three fellowship programs. The Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Fellowships and Holmes/D’Accone Dissertation Fellowship in Opera Studies support dissertation work, and the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship funds graduate work by students who are members of historically underrepresented groups.

This application allows you to apply for either or both of the Society's dissertation fellowships (AMS 50 and Holmes/D'Accone Fellowships). If you would like to apply for the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship, please note that it has a separate application form.

Eligibility

Individuals applying for the AMS 50 Fellowship or the Holmes/D'Accone Fellowship must be full-time doctoral students in good standing at a North American university (defined as all 23 countries in North America). At the time of application, applicants must have completed all formal degree requirements except the dissertation. AMS 50 applicants may be pursuing doctoral research in any area of music studies. Holmes/D'Accone applicants must be pursuing doctoral research in the field of opera studies.

Application Procedures

To apply for the Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Dissertation Fellowship and/or the Holmes/D'Accone Fellowship, the following materials are required:

1. A brief dissertation project description (maximum 200 words).
2. A current dissertation proposal of 2,000–4,000 words, double-spaced, in 12-point font. The proposal should include a detailed rationale of the project (supported by, but not limited to, an assessment of relevant secondary literature) and an overview of each chapter. It should be a sourced document with footnotes, endnotes, and/or bibliography. Word count does not include footnotes, endnotes, or bibliography.
3. A timeline (1–2 pages) for completion of the dissertation, including information about progress to date. The timeline should indicate all milestones (completion of exams, proposal approval, etc.) that are relevant for your program/institution.
4. A sample chapter or excerpt (preferably not an introductory chapter reviewing the literature). This chapter or excerpt should be one that clearly represents or bolsters your overall thesis, and should not exceed 60 double-spaced pages in length.
5. A verification from the registrar or departmental Director of Graduate Studies, attesting to ABD (all-but-dissertation) status. This must be requested using the reference request feature included in the application form, so have your attestor's name and email handy when filling in the form. You may send this letter request at any time, even before you are ready to submit the application.

NOTE: All documents should include the name of your project, but omit personally identifying information, such as your name and institution (including text, headers, footers, footnotes, and document properties). Please be particularly careful not to name university-based sources of funding or other institutional information in the prospectus and timeline.

Notification and Use of Funds

Applicants will receive a decision notice in April.

All AMS fellows receive a twelve-month stipend, currently set at $25,000. Recipients may also elect to accept the award on a non-stipendiary basis (thus freeing scarce resources for others). Fellowships are for one year and not deferrable or renewable. An AMS fellowship may not be held concurrently with a comparable or year-long fellowship from another source unless accepted on a non-stipendiary basis. There are no provisions for the payment of tuition.

AMS dissertation fellowships are intended for full-time study. They are not intended to support the early stages of research; it is expected that a fellow's dissertation will be completed within the fellowship year. Fellows are expected to focus on completing their dissertations and not to undertake more than twenty (20) hours each week of paid or unpaid employment during the fellowship term.

Overview

The Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship was established by friends of the late Howard Mayer Brown on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. Intended to increase the presence of scholars and teachers of diverse backgrounds in musicology, the fellowship supports one year of graduate work for a student at a US or Canadian university who is a member of a historically underrepresented group (such as a member of a tribal community, graduate of an HBCU, etc.).

Eligibility

Individuals applying for the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship must be full-time graduate students at a US or Canadian university who are members of a historically underrepresented group. Preference will normally be given to candidates who are citizens or residents of a North American country (defined as all 23 countries in North America). Applicants must have completed at least one year of full-time graduate work, intend to pursue a PhD, and be in good standing at their home institution. They should show evidence of academic excellence and promise of continuing achievement in music scholarship. Those in the earlier stages of the degree are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application Procedures

To apply for the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship, the following materials are required:

1. A brief statement (maximum 200 words) indicating why the applicant should be considered as belonging to a historically underrepresented group, and the ways their experiences and background positively contribute to and inform their musicological work.
2. A personal statement (maximum 1,000 words) summarizing the applicant’s musical and academic background and stating why they wish to pursue an advanced degree in music studies. Areas of research or specific topics that the applicant would pursue if supported by a Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship should be identified and discussed.
3. A curriculum vitae.
4. A sample or samples of the applicant’s work (maximum 30 pages total), such as term paper(s), thesis chapter(s), or any published material.
5. One letter of support from a faculty member. The letter should address the applicant’s general academic abilities and how these might contribute to a successful career in music studies. This must be requested using the reference request feature included in the application form, so have your letter writer's name and email handy when filling in the form. You may send this letter request at any time, even before you are ready to submit the application.

Notification and Use of Funds

Applicants will receive a decision notice in April.

All AMS fellows receive a twelve-month stipend, currently set at $25,000. The recipient may also elect to accept the award on a non-stipendiary basis (thus freeing scarce resources for others). Fellowships are for one year and not deferrable or renewable. An AMS fellowship may not be held concurrently with a comparable or year-long fellowship from another source unless accepted on a non-stipendiary basis. There are no provisions for the payment of tuition.

The Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship is intended for full-time study. Fellows are expected to focus on their studies and not to undertake more than twenty (20) hours each week of paid or unpaid employment during the fellowship term.
